Going Green? There’s an App for That!

Let’s be honest. We could all be a little bit nicer to Mother Earth.

Luckily, there’s an app for that. And, not surprisingly – we’ve given them all a whirl.

For the sake of phone storage, we were forced to choose a few of our favorites. Here are the apps that made the cut.

Now, let’s make every day Earth Day. Because it’s the only place we have to live. ☺

Craving a handful of sun-kissed strawberries? How about a bushel of crisp, organic lettuce? Mmmm…sounds like a sweet summer salad in the making! Luckily for you (and your taste buds), Farmstand is here to help. With a list of over 8,700 farmers markets worldwide, this app is your guide to fresh, local produce – complete with community photos, directions, open times and more. Your new favorite market – and your strawberry salad – awaits.

Being in the pizza industry, we’re all about sharing. Most of the time. (“Hangriness” is very, very real, guys). So, when we hear about an app that combines sharing with sustainability – you know we’ve gotta have it. Enter Carma Carpooling: the real-time ride-sharing app that helps you find nearby commuters to ride and drive with. Because, on top of reducing traffic, carbon emissions and even the cost of your trip, who doesn’t want a car-full of new friends?

How socially responsible is your shampoo? How “eco” is your Aveeno? In a world where it’s cool to be “all-natural,” GoodGuide is separating Earth-friendly fact from fiction – and all you need is a barcode. Simply scan a product to reveal its health, environmental and social rating, each based on extensive research from an in-house team of experts. From your laundry detergent to your lipstick, GoodGuide’s got your green-lovin’ life covered.

A Twitter-style app for tree-huggers, Ecoviate is a must-have for all gung-ho greenies. Between a newsfeed chock full of eco-friendly tips and photos, to an ever-growing list of green activities in your area, the app is designed to spread sustainability – the social way. Complete with “Eco-points” and rewards, a leaderboard reveals how your environmental impact rates among your friends (come on, who doesn’t love a little competition?!). Plus, they plant one tree for every download. Sold!

Now, tell us. What are some of your go-to’s in green apps?

An Eco Extravaganza

Did someone say cotton candy? Oh. We are so there.

Tack on a petting zoo, a Ferris wheel and a whole lot of GreenBox-lovin' college students, and we're in.

So when St. John's University invited us to be a part of this year's Earth Fest, it was a no-brainer. And when they decided to combine the event with their Spring Carnival - well, we even considered bringing along our sleeping bags.

"We saw you guys on Shark Tank!" never gets old. And neither does the look of amazement on people's faces when we break down our handy dandy pizza box right before their eyes.

And we couldn't be more grateful for such an opportunity.

Between the beautiful spring day and the fluffy alpaca in our sight line, it was one heck of an Earth-lovin' afternoon. The piping hot pie from our friends at SkinnyPizza was the icing on the cake - making for a one-of-a-kind event we'll never forget.

Here are few snaps of the action... tallest woman in the world and all.

Loving the Earth, Today & Always

Earth’s resources are precious, and here at GreenBox, we’re on a mission to preserve them.

This year, Earth Day is observed on April 22, but inside our “box” – not a day goes by that we don’t take the time to celebrate our wonderful planet. Earth Day is just a reminder of the objective we’ve been working toward since the beginning: innovating to meet the needs of today, while protecting the resources of tomorrow.

And we’re ecstatic to say that we’re doing just that.

Last week, the GreenBox made headlines in PSFK for “eliminating waste four-fold.” As the article points out, in the U.S. alone, 2.4 billion pizza boxes are used every year. By replacing just 1 million (0.04%) of these with our 100% recycled and recyclable GreenBox, we would preserve the following resources:

  • 5,950 trees on 30 acres of land
  • 1,120 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 2,450,000 gallons of water
  • 1,435,000 kilowatt hours of energy
  • 700 barrels of oil
  • 205,450 pounds of air pollution

The statistics are astounding.

So today (and every day), we ask that you do your part to make a difference. Cut your morning shower just a little bit short. Take the time to recycle your morning paper. Trade out an old light bulb for an eco-friendly alternative. Bike to work.

Because, if we’ve learned anything – it’s that small changes can make a remarkable difference.

We all can do our part to keep the Earth beautiful. Remember: we only have one planet, and there is no place like home.
